Why I destroyed 24 brand new lipsticks.

I create my own custom MAC Cosmetics Pro Palette with 24 of my ultimate MAC, Urban Decay and GOSH Cosmetic lipsticks.

I don't know about you but I have a slight lipstick addiction, no shade unturned but yet always gravitate to the same basic nudes. Not to say lugging around over 20 bullets taking up way to much space, increasing the overall kit weight and frustrating me when I'm on a time crunch, opening all the tubes to only have the perfect shade making its appearance last (sneaky bugger). Insert those satisfying lipstick melt videos with the beautiful colour gradient all neatly housed in a sleek MAC Pro palette.

Due to South Africa not having a Pro shop, I booked a trip to Japan to get my hands on my very own single palette with a customise x24 insert. Tax-free shopping landed this at ±R365.00 (excluding flight, accommodation and living expenses).

Prepping my kit for a week filled with very exciting things I decided that there is no better time to melt down my top 24 shades and create my own custom matte, metallic and satin lipstick palette.

What you will need:

  • MAC Pro palette or palette/ container of choice (I've seen MUAs use medicine trays. You can grab those at any plastic warehouse or Dischem).

  • Selection of lipsticks.

  • Metal spoon and spatula or knife.

  • 99% alcohol, cotton rounds, wool cosmetic tips (cotton buds) for cleaning of the palette and lipsticks.

  • Wet wipes to keep your station clean and clean equipment between lipstick melts.

  • Candle. Burns longer and you have more control over the heat.

What I learned from the experience:

  • Prep your shade range before melting. This will help to speed up the process and give you a good idea of the final palette shade look.

  • Be prepared to waste and lose a good volume of product, but that's a small sacrifice when saving on weight, space and convenience.

  • Go the full mile and cut it off at the base. Melting in sections will leave you with an unsatisfying pan fill, wasting more product.

  • Do not go too close to the flame to bubble or burn the formula.

  • Caution, it is hot! And you will burn your delicate fingers. What helped me was to create a wet wipe bed to rest the hot metal spoon while

  • Caution, it is messy and you will find out which shades have staining powers.

  • MAC Cosmetics lipstick meltdown smooth and will give you that perfect pan fill.

  • UrbanDecay Vice Mega Matte is thick AF and puts up a good fight so does all GOSH Cosmetics lipsticks

Ultimately I am super happy with the results. You know you are getting old when you get excited to melt down 24 lipsticks on a Saturday night.
